    The International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (GP-EES)
    Student Recruitment

    1. Number of students to be recruited

    The International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (“GP-EES” or “the Program”) will recruit a few graduate students in AY2021 Spring.

    2. Application qualification

    Students who meet all the requirements described below as of April 2021:

    –those who plan to be enrolled in the second year of the two-year Master’s Program in the following departments, in principle
    –those who have a prospect view of conducting doctoral thesis research related to earth and environmental sciences through international collaborative instruction with overseas partner universities and departments
    –those who receive a strong recommendation from their supervisors and are considered to be suitable for participating in GP-EES

    – Department of Earth Science
    Graduate School of Environmental Studies
    – Department of Environmental Studies for Advanced Society
    – Department of Frontier Sciences for Advanced Environment

    *Since the Program offers an integrated education combining a two-year Master’s Program and a three-year Doctoral Program, students who do not want to go on to the three-year Doctoral Program cannot apply for the Program.
    *Students who are scheduled to be enrolled in the first year of the three-year Doctoral Program and gain approval from the Program Committee of GP-EES may be allowed to participate in the Program, as a special case.
    *Those who are going to apply for the Doctoral Program (enrollment in April 2021) of the above departments from the outside and want to apply for GP-EES should consult with the Program Office (contact information is at the end of the document).
    *Our overseas partner universities or departments are defined as those approved by the Program Committee of GP-EES and have concluded agreements related to jointly supervised degrees or double degrees with Tohoku University or plan to promote the conclusion of such agreements specifically, such as University of Bayreuth, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Sorbonne University (Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) ), University of Florence, Korea Polar Research Institute, RWTH Aachen University, Université Grenoble-Alpes, Colorado School of Mines, National Taiwan University, Pennsylvania State University, Novosibirsk State University, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Maryland, College Park, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Santa Barbara, Université catholique de Louvain, and Utrecht University at the moment.
    *Those who are approved to join GP-EES should apply for JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC) in principle, except for those who wish to take double degree.

    3. Application to more than one program

    Students can apply for more than one program among the Graduate Degree Programs of Tohoku University simultaneously. Those who wish to do so should indicate the order of preference after consulting with their supervisors in advance (It does not affect the admission decisions). It should be noted that GP-EES do not allow students to participate in multiple programs simultaneously. Therefore, those who pass the examinations of more than one program including GP-EES and wish to participate in GP-EES should decline the other programs.

    4. Application procedures

    Application period: December 14 (Mon), 2020 – January 8 (Fri), 2021, 9:00–16:00
    (We will be closed on Saturday, Sunday, and national holidays. Also, due to the New Year’s holiday season, we will be closed from December 29 (Tue), 2020 to January 3 (Sun), 2021.)

    They must be sent by registered mail, with “Encl. application documents for GP-EES” written in red on the envelope.

    5. Application documents

    A complete set of the following documents must be submitted within the application period.
    The application documents can be downloaded from:

    (1)Application (Form A)
    (2)Reason for the application(Form B)
    (3)Recommendation from supervisor (Form C)
    (4)Original copies of academic transcripts (Undergraduate and graduate ones)
    (5)Copies of test scores for official English language skills (TOEFL®, TOEIC®, IELTS, etc.)

    *If certificates to be submitted are written in a foreign language other than English, a Japanese or English translation must be attached. (A translation prepared by the applicant is acceptable.)
    *Incomplete applications are not accepted.
    *Submitted application documents are not returnable.
    *TOEFL® and TOEIC® are registered trademarks of the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
    *Those who cannot submit the document (5) due to the effect of COVID-19 (e.g. cancellation of a test) should consult with the Program Office (contact information is at the end of the document).

    6. Selection method

    Students are selected based on an examination of their application documents and an interview.
    The interview is planned to be conducted between February 8 (Mon) and February 10 (Wed), 2021.

    7. Announcement of application results

    The official announcement of application results is to be made on March 19 (Fri), 2021.
    It will be sent to all applicants by e-mail.

    8. Financial support

    To acquire excellent students from Japan and abroad and make them plan and carry out unique research independently, thereby developing them into individuals who have a doctoral degree and can play an active role in international community, we provide financial support to excellent graduate students who are selected for the Program. The amount of allowance is determined by the Support System for International Collaborative Degree Programs, Tohoku University. Students who are receiving other financial assistance are required to contact us. In the case of adopting beyond capacity, it can be difficult to provide a full financial support due to the budgetary reason.

    9. Completion requirements

    To complete the Program, students must fulfill not only the requirements for completion of their Graduate Schools, but also the requirements separately prescribed for completion of the Program.
