Greeting From the program director

GP-EES Program
Director
Toshio Suga
Professor,
Graduate School of Science
The International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environment Sciences (GP-EES) is one of the programs constitutes a group of “International Joint Graduate Programs” that provide international collaborative education under strong collaboration between Tohoku University and leading universities overseas, and fosters advanced human resources who can lead the world. The purpose of GP-EES is to foster international researchers with a wide range of perspectives and leadership who are motivated and capable of “understanding the entire earth”. In cooperation with many overseas educational and research institutions, we cover a wide range of earth and environmental science fields. We have been producing graduates who have obtained a Double Degree or Jointly Supervised Degree, a proof of international joint education, since FY2018.
Students participating in the program are selected from those of Graduate School of Science and Graduate School of Environmental Studies. They take lectures specially provided to develop cosmopolitan thinking and interdisciplinary research skills in addition to the regular curriculum. They are also required to conduct research at a partner university overseas for a total of 6 months or more. Moreover, plenty of opportunities are provided to bring out one’s own potential and to hone one’s qualities as an internationally active researcher through interactions with faculty and students who have diverse backgrounds, which includes participating in international cross-disciplinary workshops regularly held by GP-EES and conducting daily discussions with invited faculty members overseas. In order to make the most of these learning menus, program students can receive various kinds of support such as financial support and overseas travel support.
The appearance of the program students, who have grown and returned from long-term training overseas, speaks eloquently of the great effect of this program at the beginning of the career of a researcher, namely, one’s graduate student days. We look forward to your active participation!
