Tohoku University aims to enhance its research capabilities through a three-tier research capability enhancement package. The Core Research Cluster and the International Research Cluster are positioned at the top and second tiers, respectively, of that, and each cluster has a corresponding international joint graduate program.
The “Earth and Environmental Sciences” is positioned as a Research Cluster (RC) in the second level of this package, and GP-EES was established in conjunction with the RC.
Last year, a proposal from Tohoku University was selected by the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and in January of this year, the WPI-AIMEC (Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change) was established. In response, the Earth and Environmental Science RC was promoted to a first-tier Core Research Cluster (CRC), encompassing the WPI-AIMEC. Therefore, the GP-EES will be expanded to correspond to the Earth and Environmental Science CRC.
The following graduate schools and departments will newly participate in the GP-EES so that graduate students studying in academic fields related to marine ecosystem change covered by WPI-AIMEC can participate in the GP-EES.
Graduate School of Agricultural Science: Department of Agricultural Bioscience
Graduate School of Life Sciences: Department of Ecological Developmental Adaptability Life Sciences, Department of Molecular and Chemical Life Sciences, Department of Integrative Life Sciences
Graduate School of Information Sciences: Department of System Information Sciences, Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Department of Applied Information Sciences, Department of Human-Social Information Sciences
Graduate School of Engineering: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
These graduate schools and departments will be eligible for GP-EES student recruitment from the April 2025 term.
