The International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (GP-EES) is one of Tohoku University’s “International Joint Graduate Programs” that jointly provides an international educational experience based on strong collaboration links between Tohoku University and leading overseas universities. The objective of GP-EES is to nurture internationally minded researchers who have the desire and ability to “understand the entire planet” and possess broad perspectives and leadership. Since its launch in 2016, the program has expanded its collaboration with overseas educational and research institutions to cover various fields of earth and environmental sciences. From 2025, the number of research areas participating in this program has increased significantly, extending to fields related to the change of the marine ecosystem.
The students who participate in the program come from the Graduate Schools of Science, Environmental Studies, Agricultural Science, Life Sciences, Information Sciences, and Engineering at Tohoku University. They attend lectures designed to cultivate international and interdisciplinary research skills in addition to the regular curriculum. They are also required to conduct research at a partner university overseas for a total of six months or more. In addition, many opportunities are provided to show one’s potential and develop one’s qualities as an internationally active researcher through interactions with faculty and students of diverse backgrounds, including participation in international cross-disciplinary workshops held regularly by GP-EES and daily discussions with invited faculty members overseas. Financial support, stipend, and assistance for overseas travel are available to take full advantage of these opportunities.
Returning students from the international experience testify to the great benefit of this program at the beginning of their career as a researcher. We hope to see your active participation in GP-EES!
