    Application period: October 30 (Mon) – November 30 (Thu), 2017 for the positions starting from April 2018, – May 15 (Tue), 2018 for the positions starting from October 2018

    Doctoral Research Assistantship Openings are available for GP-EES at Tohoku University

    Four research assistantships are available for the International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (GP-EES) of Tohoku University. The positions are open starting with both April and October 2018. The successful applicants will spend at least 6 months during the doctoral work at our partner universities outside Japan and have an opportunity to be awarded the Jointly-Supervised Doctoral degree (JSD) from Tohoku University.

    Projects

    1. Physical volcanology and volcano seismology (Takeshi Nishimura, nishi[at]zisin.gp.tohoku.ac.jp)

    2. Formation and evolution of the core of the Earth and Planets (Eiji Ohtani, ohtani[at]m.tohoku.ac.jp)

    3. Hydrogen circulation in the deep Earth: high pressure hydrous minerals in the lower mantle and hydrogen in the Earth’s core (Eiji Ohtani, ohtani[at]m.tohoku.ac.jp)

    4. Litho-, bio-, and chemostratigraphic study on Jurassic to Cretaceous carbonate succession. (Yasufumi Iryu, iryu[at]m.tohoku.ac.jp)

    5. Observational physical oceanography on ocean ventilation, ocean’s role in climate and biogeochemical impact (Toshio Suga, suga[at]pol.gp.tohoku.ac.jp)

    6. Experimental petrology/volcanology on eruption dynamics (Michihiko Nakamura, michihiko.nakamura.e8[at]tohoku.ac.jp)

    For these positions, a master degree in Earth and planetary sciences and related fields such as solid-state physics and fluid dynamics is required. Good oral and writing skills in English language are mandatory.

    Financial Supports

    Following financial supports will be given by GP-EES through the Tohoku University International Joint Education Scholarship Program.

    ① Expenses for traveling overseas, as per travel expense regulations (excludes per diem, lodging and meals) for JSD/DD projects.
    *If supports related to overseas travel will be received from another organization, the applicant cannot receive expenses for traveling overseas via this system.

    ・Region C, JPY 120,000
    *Destinations (Designated Cities, Regions A/B/C) shown on [appended table]
    *If a scholarship for participating in the program will be received from another organization, its amount will be deducted from the amounts shown above, and the remainder only will be paid.
    *After the completion of study abroad programs, students are required to submit the research report (in English; about five pages of A4) (free format) to the Student Exchange Division through the section in charge in their department within one month after returning to Japan.

    ③ Research assistant payroll
    Research assistant payroll of approximately JPY 200,000/months will be available during the term at work in Tohoku University. Monthly payment will be variable depending on the days worked. The research assistants are requested to turn in prescribed documents before the appointed date every month.

    Applications should consist of a curriculum vitae, motivation letter including the project to be engaged in and prior experience in the related areas, two short reference letters (1-2 pages) with the evaluators’ contact information.     Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until positions are filled, but not later than November 30th, 2017 for the positions starting from April 2018, and than May 15th, 2018 for the positions starting from October 2018.

    Note

    1. Successful applicants need to take the official entrance examination to the Department of Earth Science or Department of Geophysics, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University subsequently. The details will be informed to the applicant for GP-EES after the results announcement.

    2. If you are interested in IGPAS (International Graduate Program for Advanced Science-> http://www.sci.tohoku.ac.jp/english/igpas/) of which application is starting soon, this can be another pathway to the fellowship positions starting from October 2018.
